Pretty much the only group of people who say 'howdy' or 'y'all' are from the South or know people from the South (my best friend is from Texas, scarily enough). The Inland Northerners (we call them the Midwest) just sound vaguely like those in the movie Fargo.
And as a sidenote, 'all y'all' is the plural of 'y'all'. Bet you didn't even know that 'y'all' is singular.
Isn't American fun? :p
